I was born into a home with a real live Marine for a father and a real live Saint for a mother...You'd think that this combination could've really screwed me up but I think that I turned out alright. You might say that my life has been both hard and soft so we will just call it balanced to be fair to both parties.
My Father was a teriffic racing enthusiast and was always working on a car or motorcycle for hobby and for money. His natural mechanical ability and his curiosity lead him to get involved in some cool projects and meet some great "gearheads" of our time. He never shyed away from taking me along and putting me to work getting my hands dirty just like his. I just figured that grease under the fingernails was something to be proud of and it never dawned on me that some people looked down on us for it. Anyway, we were having too much fun to notice.
Besides going to the races with my dad, we also had all the cool toys around home to tinker with like go-karts and mini-bikes. For a kid growing up in the turbulent sixties, I kind of had my own little motorized utopia and failed to notice all the violence and civil unrest that was busting out all across the nation. I'd see my folks' concerned looks at what they were seeing on TV and then head for the garage to "my church" and leave the chaos behind. In my book, God looks out for those who dedicate themselves to skilled trades and mechanics because they can put iron to work and move a nation into the future. He does this by surrounding them with a loving and patient family.
I thought that I had pursued and accomplished most of my life's goals by the age of 29...Well as you can see, you just can't fill the "need for speed" setting in an office behind a computer screen. My spirit has become quite restless and when these opportunities come around to get involved, it turns into an obsession.
My bio as it relates to the Royal Enfield connection wouldn't be complete without mentioning the impact that Dan Holmes has had on me. You must know that I knew him as a kid and I used to hang out at his dad's motorcycle shop. I knew that he was a dirt track racer of some acomplishment. He was not all that much older than me but had a heathy dose of selfconfidence and maturity that seemed to span the playfulness of teenagers and the seriousness of the adults around him. These traits and a great talent at telling stories and I was hooked! Dan is a natural catalyst to make things happen! He's my life long friend and mentor too. Great things happen around him and I'm here to tell ya, I'm along for the ride!
I suppose I could fill volumes with just the descriptions of car and motorcycle projects that I have been involved with, so let’s just say I have enough background and knowledge to be an asset to most any specialty vehicle program. My true heart's desire is to pursue land speed records with two and four wheels. My first car model was Mickey Thompson’s Challenger II streamliner and I can recollect passing by Bob and Bill Summers' machine shop in Ontario California and seeing their World record holding streamliner “Goldenrod” setting in the window. I collect most anything that I can find that has to do with speed record vehicles with an emphasis on Mercedes and Auto-Union pre-war record attempts. Yea, Rosemeyer and Carriciola were fearless KINGS in their day! Those days speeding along German super highways will never be relived but thank God that we have the salt flats to continue their pursuit. I only hope that I have inherited some of that German resolve to succeed. I'm quite proud of my German heritage even if it is very distant. The traits passed down through the genes still show through and "perfection" can be the only result of ones efforts. Anything less is not acceptable. Amen.
I hope to share with you my stories and discoveries in my Bikeroom and perhaps you'll feel a part of our great adventure, The B'ville Bullet!
My heroes when I was growing up were Dan Gurney, Craig Breedlove, Bill Summers, and Don Vesco. If it’s low, sleek and fast…I’m there!- Phil
